You search online for a pair of sneakers. Minutes later, similar shoes appear in your feed. A shopping site offers a discount, says only two pairs are left, and suggests a matching jacket. Artificial intelligence may be helping decide not only what you see, but also which message is most likely to make you buy.
Personal recommendations can be useful. They save us from searching through hundreds of products. But AI also helps stores learn from what we search for, click on, or leave in a shopping cart. It can then change its suggestions quickly and show them at the moment when we are most likely to respond.
This works partly by making shopping feel easier. A short list seems more helpful than a page full of choices. Reviews make a product feel familiar, while low-stock messages and short discounts create pressure. None of these methods is new. AI simply makes them faster and more personal.
Advertising may also be harder to notice when it appears inside an AI conversation. In one experiment with 179 people, many users did not recognize product suggestions in chatbot replies as advertising. Some read them as ordinary advice instead.
AI does not take away our freedom to choose. Its power is quieter: it can shorten the time between wanting something and stopping to ask whether we need it.
One way to slow that process is mindful shopping. This does not mean meditating before every purchase. It means noticing what is pushing you toward the "buy" button. Research published in 2025 found that people who were generally more mindful tended to report less impulse buying. However, one short mindfulness exercise did not reduce buying urges right away. Awareness helps, but it is not a magic switch.
Before buying something unplanned, ask three simple questions: Did I want this before I saw the recommendation? What need will it meet? How often will I use it?
You can also add small delays. Leave the item in your cart overnight. Turn off shopping alerts. Remove saved payment details. Use a shopping list, and compare the product with choices outside the site that recommended it.
Companies also have a part to play. Ads should be clearly marked, and recommendation systems should explain why a product is being shown. AI may make temptation more personal and timely, but a short pause can give the final decision back to you.
