Not every animal raises its young in the same way. Some spend months guarding a single egg, while others leave their babies in another animal's care. Across the animal kingdom, successful parenting can require patience, teamwork, clever tricks, or an extraordinary sacrifice.

The common cuckoo is famous for making other birds do its work. Instead of building a nest, a female secretly lays an egg in another bird's nest. The cuckoo chick often hatches before the host's young and pushes the other eggs out. It can also copy the hungry calls of several chicks, persuading its foster parents to keep bringing food.

Brown-headed cowbirds use a similar strategy, known as brood parasitism. A female slips an egg into the nest of a smaller bird, which may then spend weeks feeding the unusually large chick. Some research suggests that cowbirds may even damage nests belonging to birds that reject their eggs. It is a tough strategy, but it reduces the work required from the cowbird parents.

The cuckoo catfish of Africa's Lake Tanganyika takes this trick underwater. It waits for mouthbrooding cichlid fish to lay eggs, then mixes its own eggs among them. The cichlid gathers all the eggs into its mouth for protection. The catfish hatch first and consume some of the host's developing young before swimming away.

Other animals do the opposite: they take on nearly all the work themselves. Emperor penguins must cooperate to protect their single egg from the Antarctic cold. After laying it, the female leaves to find food. The male balances the egg on his feet beneath a warm fold of skin for about two months without feeding. The female usually returns with food around the time the chick hatches.

A female giant Pacific octopus makes an even greater investment. After laying tens of thousands of eggs, she spends months guarding and cleaning them. She pushes oxygen-rich water over the eggs and removes debris, never leaving even to hunt. By the time they hatch, she is extremely weak and does not survive much longer.

Some parents rely on clever action rather than long periods of waiting. Killdeer lay their eggs on open ground, where nests are difficult to hide. When a predator approaches, a parent limps away while dragging one wing as if it were injured. The predator follows what looks like an easy meal. Once it is safely away from the nest, the healthy bird flies off.

Male strawberry poison dart frogs turn parenting into a transport job. After the eggs hatch, the father carries each tadpole on his back to a tiny pool of water inside a plant. He places the young in separate pools, reducing competition between them. The female later returns and leaves unfertilized eggs for the tadpoles to eat.

Female alligators also show unexpected care. They build nests from plants that produce heat as they break down, creating a natural incubator. When the babies begin calling from inside their eggs, the mother digs them out. She gently carries them to the water in her powerful jaws and remains nearby for months to protect them.

These parents could hardly look more different. Some guard, some deceive, and some divide the work. Their methods may seem loving, ruthless, or simply strange to human eyes. In nature, however, parenting has one central purpose: giving the next generation its best chance to survive.
