Picture your bedroom. Neat and organized? That's low entropy. But leave it alone, and chaos creeps in — clothes on the floor, papers everywhere. That's entropy increasing.

This tendency toward disorder is a fundamental law of physics. It's why ice cubes melt in your drink, hot things cool down, and the universe slowly evens out its energy. Disorder is not a mistake; it is the default. Order is always artificial and temporary. Your house doesn't clean itself — it takes energy and effort to maintain order. Stars burn out, structures crumble, and ice melts. Entropy is the universe's tax on time.

Discovery of Entropy

The concept of entropy was identified by Rudolf Clausius (1822 – 1888), a German physicist who noticed something odd while studying steam engines: only a percentage of energy gets converted into useful work. The rest spreads out and is lost. Nature was exacting a tax.

When your coffee sits on the table, heat flows from the hot liquid into the cooler room — naturally, without effort. But heating cold water requires a power source. Heat flows one way on its own; reversing it costs energy. Clausius summarized it simply: "The energy of the universe is constant. The entropy of the universe tends to a maximum."

Entropy and Time

Entropy is one of the few concepts that give us evidence for the existence of time. As Stephen Hawking put it, "The increase of disorder or entropy is what distinguishes the past from the future, giving a direction to time."

Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia captures this beautifully: "When you stir your rice pudding, the spoonful of jam spreads itself round making red trails. But if you stir backwards, the jam will not come together again." Entropy only goes one way.

Entropy in Business and Everyday Life

Just as energy tends toward disorder, so do businesses and organizations. Imagine starting a company: put 20 people in an office with an ambitious goal and no leadership, and come back two months later to find that five have quit, and the remaining ten have no idea how to solve the problems that have arisen. Left to its own devices, the whole enterprise falls apart.

Entropy occurs in every aspect of a business. Employees forget training, lose enthusiasm, and cut corners. Products become outdated. Equipment breaks down. Without constant effort, a business slides toward chaos.

The same is true in everyday life. Once-tidy rooms become cluttered. Strong relationships grow fractured. Complex skills are forgotten. Buildings degrade. The question is not whether we can prevent entropy — we can't — but whether we choose to fight back.

You can clean a messy house, pull weeds, practice your skills, and maintain your relationships. But it requires constant energy. As Steven Pinker writes, the ultimate purpose of life and human striving is "to deploy energy and information to fight back the tide of entropy and carve out refuges of beneficial order." Failing to pay nature's tax means things inevitably get more complicated, disorganized, and messier.

Using Entropy to Gain an Advantage

Understanding entropy reveals a crucial distinction: active versus passive stability. A well-designed ship can sail through a storm without intervention — that's passive stability. A fighter jet can't fly for more than a few seconds without constant software-controlled adjustments. Cut the power and it crashes.

People get in trouble when they confuse the two. Relationships require active attention and care. If you assume your relationship is passively stable — that it will take care of itself — you may wake up one day to a nasty surprise. The same goes for your career, your skills, and your health.

The tiny decisions we make — or don't make — to fight entropy create massively different outcomes over time. We cannot expect anything to stay the way we leave it. To maintain our health, relationships, careers, and skills requires never-ending effort and vigilance.

That's why one of the hardest things in life is keeping it simple.
