
Microsoft PowerPoint has become the default tool for presenting learning material — in classrooms, universities, company training programs, webinars and online courses. But is it being used well? Learners face a real challenge when they watch a slideshow. They have to listen to the speaker and, at the same time, find the matching picture, chart or line of text on the slide. That extra effort can get in the way of learning.
Two researchers at the Tokyo University of Science in Japan, Hikaru Ito and Professor Hiroko Ichikawa, wanted to know whether a simple change in slide design could solve the problem. They built on a well-tested idea from educational psychology: people learn better when words and images arrive together, in small pieces.
Their solution is called "cumulative presentation." Instead of showing a full slide at once, the visual elements appear one by one, exactly when the speaker talks about them. Take a graph about animals in the wild. When the speaker says that prey and predators grow in number over time, the curves rise on screen at that moment. When the speaker explains that predator numbers fall after prey numbers fall, the next part of the curve appears. The audience sees each piece just as they hear about it.
The team compared this with the traditional format, in which the whole slide — the entire graph — is shown before the speaker starts talking.
Most earlier studies judged teaching methods by test scores alone, Prof. Ichikawa said. Her team also tracked eye movements, so they could see not only whether learning improved but how it improved.
The researchers recruited 40 university students. Twenty watched the cumulative version and twenty watched the whole-slide version. Everyone went through the same three steps.
First, they took a short test on the topic, so the team could check that both groups started with similar knowledge. Second, they watched and listened to a recording of the same seven-slide presentation; only the format was different. An eye tracker on the screen recorded where they looked. Third, they took the same test again, plus a short questionnaire asking how difficult they had found the lesson and the test.
Before the presentation, the two groups scored about the same. Afterwards, the cumulative group scored higher — clear evidence that the new design helped people learn.
But why? The eye-tracking data gave the answer. Students in the cumulative group looked at each newly appearing element sooner, and kept looking at it longer, than students who saw everything at once. The design pulled their attention straight to the thing the speaker was describing, and held it there.
There was one more encouraging finding. The two groups rated the lesson and the test as equally difficult. In other words, cumulative presentation improved results without making the material feel any harder.
Teachers, trainers and presenters can break visual information into segments and match each segment to what they are saying, Prof. Ichikawa said. Learners can then take in the pictures and the words step by step, and slowly build up the whole slide in their minds. She added that AI tools that generate teaching materials could be trained to follow the same rule.
As online classes and virtual presentations become a normal part of study and work, how information is presented matters more than ever. A small change in the way a slide unfolds may be one of the easiest ways to help an audience keep up.
