Your Metabolism Doesn't Slow Down in Your 30s

You feel more tired than you did ten years ago. Your clothes fit a little more tightly, and losing weight seems harder than it used to be.

There is an obvious explanation — or so many of us think: "My metabolism is slowing down."

The idea sounds scientifically reasonable. Metabolism is the vast collection of chemical processes that keeps the body running. It converts food into usable energy, maintains body temperature, repairs tissue, and supports everything from breathing to thinking.

If this system slows with age, then middle-aged weight gain may appear unavoidable. But a large international study suggests that metabolism follows a very different timetable.

For most adults, the dramatic slowdown does not begin in their thirties or forties. It starts much later.

The Four Stages of Metabolism

In 2021, researchers analyzed daily energy expenditure in more than 6,400 people from 29 countries. The participants ranged from eight-day-old babies to adults aged 95.

The researchers used a technique called doubly labelled water. Participants drank water containing traceable forms of hydrogen and oxygen. By measuring how quickly those elements left the body, scientists could estimate how much energy each person used while living normally.

After accounting for differences in body size and composition, the researchers identified four broad metabolic stages.

The first is infancy. During the first year of life, energy expenditure rises rapidly. At its peak, a baby can burn energy about 50 percent faster than an adult, relative to body size. Growing a body — and especially a brain — requires an extraordinary amount of fuel.

After the first year, metabolism gradually slows. This decline continues through childhood and adolescence, at roughly 3 percent a year, until a person reaches their early twenties.

Then comes the surprising part.

From about age 20 to age 60, energy expenditure remains remarkably stable. The study found no major metabolic collapse at 30, 40, or 50. Even pregnancy did not produce a lasting change beyond what researchers would expect from changes in body size and composition.

Only after about 60 did average energy expenditure begin to fall again. The decline continued gradually, and by the nineties, daily expenditure was around 26 percent lower than in middle age.

If It Isn't Metabolism, What Changes?

The findings do not mean that people imagine the physical changes of middle age. Those changes are real. What may be wrong is the explanation.

Life often looks very different at 40 than it did at 20. Work becomes more demanding. People may spend longer periods sitting, exercise less often, sleep poorly, or have less time to prepare food. Small changes can accumulate quietly over many years.

Body composition also matters. Resting metabolism is strongly influenced by the amount of lean tissue a person has. Muscle requires energy to maintain, so losing muscle can reduce the number of calories the body uses.

Some muscle loss can accompany ageing, but age is rarely the only factor. Lower activity levels and insufficient protein can contribute as well. In other words, the calendar matters less than what happens to the body as the years pass.

This does not mean that weight change is simply a matter of willpower. Genetics, medication, illness, hormones, sleep, stress, income, and access to healthy food can all play a role. The important point is narrower: an automatic metabolic crash in early middle age is usually not the whole explanation.

What Can We Control?

Because muscle and activity help shape energy use, maintaining both becomes increasingly valuable with age.

Current UK guidance recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Adults are also advised to do muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days a week.

Strengthening does not have to mean lifting enormous weights. Resistance exercises, yoga, climbing stairs, gardening, and carrying heavy shopping bags can all make muscles work. Breaking up long periods of sitting is useful too.

Metabolism does eventually slow, and no amount of exercise can stop every biological effect of ageing. But the decline begins later and progresses more gradually than many people assume.

So if your body feels different in your thirties or forties, your metabolism may not have deserted you. It may simply be responding to a life that has changed around it.
