
First principles thinking is one of the best ways to discover new solutions to old problems.
Sometimes called "reasoning from first principles," it's a tool for breaking down complicated problems by separating what we know is absolutely true from anything that is merely assumed. What remains are the essentials. If you know the first principles of something, you can build the rest of your knowledge around them — and produce something genuinely new.
Think of a house made from Lego blocks. You know it's possible to make a house, so you might move a few blocks around to improve it slightly. Most people stop there. But going a level deeper — breaking the house into individual pieces — opens a world of possibility. You can build something entirely different.

Two techniques for getting to first principles
If we never learn to take something apart, test our assumptions, and reconstruct it, we remain trapped by what other people tell us is possible.
Socratic questioning is a disciplined process for establishing truths by challenging assumptions. It asks: Why do I think this? How do I know it's true? What would others think? What if I'm wrong? This stops us from relying on gut feelings and builds thinking that lasts.
The Five Whys is perhaps even simpler — and children do it naturally. The idea is to keep asking "why" until you reach bedrock.
Here's an example:
"It's time to brush our teeth and go to bed."
"Why?"
"Because we need sleep to take care of our bodies."
"Why do we need sleep?"
"Because we'd die if we never slept."
"Why would that make us die?"
"I don't know — let's look it up."
Kids are just trying to understand the world. The problem is that most of us, somewhere along the way, start accepting "because that's how it's done" as a sufficient answer.
Elon Musk and the $80 battery
Perhaps no one embodies first-principles thinking more dramatically than Elon Musk. When he decided he wanted to send people to Mars, he ran into a familiar obstacle: rockets are extraordinarily expensive.
Rather than accepting this as fact, Musk asked: What is a rocket actually made of? Aerospace-grade aluminum alloys, titanium, copper, carbon fiber. He then asked what those raw materials cost on commodity markets. The answer: about 2% of what a finished rocket sells for.
He applied the same logic to batteries. When people said battery packs cost $600 per kilowatt-hour and would always be that expensive, Musk broke it down to raw materials — cobalt, nickel, aluminum, carbon, polymers, a steel can. On the open market? About $80 per kilowatt-hour. "So, clearly," he concluded, "you just need to think of clever ways to combine those materials into the shape of a battery cell, and you can have batteries that are much, much cheaper than anyone realizes."
That's first principles in action: ignore the inherited price, understand the actual cost.
Applying it to everyday life
First principles thinking isn't only for rocket scientists. Consider a few common mental traps:
"I don't have a good memory." Research suggests people can store far more information than they think. Reframing this as a systems problem — how do I organize what I learn? — opens practical solutions instead of writing yourself off.
"All the good ideas are taken." People have been saying this for centuries. New businesses and new ideas keep appearing. The real constraint is usually a failure to question the assumptions hiding inside existing ones.
"We need to move first." The iPhone wasn't first — it was better. Microsoft wasn't the first to sell operating systems. What matters is understanding why something works, not just copying who got there earliest.
The point
First principles thinking clears the clutter of inherited assumptions and lets us rebuild from the ground up. It's not easy — that's precisely why the rewards for doing it tend to be outsized.
