At 94, my mother is still very busy and active. When a vacuum cleaner she wanted went on sale at a national electronics chain, she drove herself to the nearest store to buy it.
Unfortunately, the model had sold out by the time she arrived. A sales assistant told her it was still available at another store in Melbourne, but that location was an hour's drive away. Mum explained that, active as she was, she could not manage a journey of that length. She asked whether the vacuum could be transferred to the local store, but the answer was a firm no.
As Mum stood there, disappointed by the poor service, a woman waiting behind her spoke up. She offered to drive to the other store, collect the vacuum and bring it to Mum's house.
The woman seemed genuinely kind, so Mum accepted the offer, placed the order and gave her the address. When Mum later told me what had happened, my heart sank. I could not imagine it ending well. But I was completely wrong.
The stranger kept her promise. The next day, she made the long drive, picked up the vacuum and delivered it to my mother's home. Before leaving, she asked whether Mum could put it together herself. Of course she could not, so the woman assembled it for her as well.
The two stayed in touch and later went out for coffee. Mum doesn't let anyone go that quickly! Only afterward did she discover that the helpful stranger was Michele Timms, a famous Australian basketball player and Hall of Fame athlete.
Neither my sister nor I live in Melbourne, so Mum often depends on friends and relatives nearby when she needs help. Knowing that a complete stranger had stepped in when we could not made the whole experience especially moving.
What stayed with me was not only the long drive or the work of assembling the vacuum. It was the fact that this woman noticed someone who needed help and acted without being asked. Her kindness turned an ordinary shopping problem into a new friendship. It also reminded me that unexpected generosity still exists, sometimes in the person standing just behind us in a queue.
