
The experiment began with a harmless deception.
Nearly 200 volunteers at McGill University were told that they were testing an application on a tablet. The app, however, was not the researchers' main interest. What mattered was where the tablet had been placed.
For one group, it stood on a raised table, encouraging participants to sit upright. For another, it lay flat on a much lower surface, causing them to lean forward and hunch over.
Nobody was told to adopt a particular pose. Most participants did not even realize that their posture was part of the experiment.
Then the researchers handed them a virtual balloon.
Knowing when to stop pumping
In the game, participants could earn more money by repeatedly inflating the balloon. Each pump increased the possible reward — but also raised the chance that the balloon would burst. Players could stop at any point and save their earnings. If the balloon popped first, they lost everything from that round.
The task was designed to measure risk-taking. A player who stopped too early missed possible rewards, while someone who pumped endlessly was likely to lose.
Participants encouraged to sit upright generally took more risks than those who were hunched over. More importantly, they also earned larger rewards. This suggests they were not merely acting carelessly; their risks were more effective.
The upright group also reported stronger feelings of pride, an emotion associated with confidence and positive mood.
The differences were modest, but they raise an intriguing possibility: A desk, chair or screen may influence more than physical comfort. By changing how the body is positioned, an ordinary workspace might also produce small changes in how a person feels and behaves.
Escaping the "power pose" problem
The idea that posture affects the mind is not new. For years, researchers have studied whether standing tall or taking up more space can make people feel confident and powerful.
Some early claims about "power poses" attracted enormous attention — and later criticism. In many experiments, participants were directly instructed to hold a confident or submissive pose. That created a problem: If people guessed the purpose of the study, they might behave as they believed the researchers expected.
The McGill team tried to avoid that issue. Instead of asking anyone to sit straight, they changed the physical environment. The height of the table and position of the tablet guided posture without announcing the experiment's real goal.
Afterward, most participants said they had not noticed the manipulation. The researchers also used video software to measure neck angles, allowing them to check whether people had actually adopted the intended positions.
This does not settle every debate about posture. It does, however, provide evidence that posture may have an effect even when people are not consciously performing confidence.
Your chair is not a life coach
The study does not prove that sitting upright will make every decision wiser. It involved a laboratory game, not choices about careers, relationships or money. The participants were mostly young adults from one university community, and the observed effects were small.
Nor should slouching be treated as a personal failure. Comfort, disability, fatigue and body shape all influence how people sit.
The more useful conclusion concerns environments. A low laptop screen may keep a person bent forward for hours, while a better-positioned monitor may encourage a more open posture without requiring constant effort.
Ergonomic design is usually discussed as a way to prevent physical discomfort. This research suggests it might also have subtle psychological effects.
The tablet stand did not turn participants into fearless gamblers. It merely changed their posture — and that small physical adjustment appeared to change how they played.
