
Place two people in the same airport and ask them to look around. One may immediately notice the departure screens. The other may focus on a family saying goodbye, an unusual suitcase or the coffee shop near the gate.
They are standing in the same place, but they may be seeing very different versions of it.
We often assume that attention is controlled by whatever looks most striking. Bright colors, moving objects and human faces naturally attract the eyes. But a study suggests that attention also has a surprisingly personal side. Each person may carry a stable way of exploring the visual world — something researchers describe as an "attentional fingerprint."
The researchers asked 61 people to wear virtual reality headsets and freely explore 100 realistic, 360-degree scenes. The locations included airports, public swimming pools and car repair shops. Eye-tracking technology recorded exactly where each participant looked.
Two people viewing the same place often focused on completely different things. More importantly, those differences were not random.
A person who explored one scene in a particular way tended to show a similar pattern in other environments. When some participants returned later to view a new collection of scenes, their individual patterns remained recognizable. From the movements of their eyes, the researchers could often identify who was looking.
But what created these visual fingerprints?
The team tested three possible influences. The first was the physical layout of the scene — where objects were placed and how the space was organized. The second was visual appearance, including shape, color and other noticeable features. The third was meaning: what the objects were, what they were used for and how they related to the situation.
Visual appearance was still the strongest general predictor of where people looked. A large or unusual object naturally attracted attention from many viewers.
Meaning, however, did a better job of explaining the personal differences between them.
To study this, the researchers collected descriptions of small areas within each scene. Some descriptions simply named an object: "a hat." Others added context: "a hat on someone's head." The most detailed descriptions explained its possible purpose: "a hat that may be protecting someone's eyes from the sun."
The richer the description became, the better the model was at predicting the individual side of a person's gaze. When the researchers deliberately matched descriptions with the wrong parts of a scene, that advantage disappeared. The model was responding to relevant meaning, not merely to longer sentences.
This suggests that people do not enter a new place with completely empty minds. They arrive with memories, knowledge and expectations that influence what seems important.
A mechanic may notice tools that everyone else ignores. A frequent traveler may immediately check signs and exits. Someone who loves design may study the furniture before noticing the people sitting on it. The eyes receive the same scene, but the mind quietly decides which parts deserve attention.
The researchers warn that an attentional fingerprint is not a secret personality test. Eye movements cannot directly reveal someone's beliefs, preferences or values. Experience, mood and the situation itself may all affect where a person looks.
Still, the findings offer an intriguing idea: seeing is not simply a matter of opening our eyes. Every time we enter a room, we bring part of ourselves with us.
