
In one of Antarctica's coldest and driest valleys, a stream of dark red water slowly pours from the edge of a glacier. Against the white ice, it looks as if the glacier itself is bleeding.
The place is called Blood Falls. Its dramatic appearance has puzzled visitors and scientists for more than a century — but the liquid is neither blood nor melted red ice.
When geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor reached the area in 1911, he thought red algae might explain the color. Later research revealed a stranger answer: the water is an extremely salty, iron-rich liquid that has been trapped beneath Taylor Glacier for more than a million years.
The hidden water probably began as seawater. As the glacier moved over it, the water became sealed beneath hundreds of meters of ice. Much of it gradually froze, leaving the remaining liquid increasingly salty.
That salt is the reason the water can still flow in temperatures far below the normal freezing point. Salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes, much as it helps prevent ice from forming on winter roads.
There is another useful trick. When part of the underground water freezes, it releases a small amount of heat. That heat warms the surrounding ice and helps keep narrow channels open. Through these passages, the red liquid can slowly travel toward the glacier's edge.
The water does not become red until it reaches the surface. Beneath the glacier, it contains dissolved iron. When that iron meets oxygen in the air, it reacts in much the same way as iron left outside in the rain.
In other words, Blood Falls is red because it is rusting.
Yet its color is only part of the mystery. The hidden water also contains microorganisms that have survived without sunlight and with very little oxygen. Instead of depending on plants or sunlight for energy, they use chemical reactions involving minerals in the water.
This dark ecosystem interests scientists because it shows how life can survive in places once considered almost impossible to inhabit. Similar environments may exist beneath other glaciers — and perhaps beneath the frozen surfaces of distant worlds.
Scientists have also been trying to understand why Blood Falls appears in sudden bursts rather than flowing steadily.
A recent study offered an unusual clue. Researchers happened to have three instruments operating near the falls at the same time: a GPS station measuring the glacier, a camera photographing the red flow and temperature sensors in the lake below.
Together, the instruments captured an outflow event. As fresh red water appeared, the glacier's surface dropped by about 15 millimeters and its forward movement slowed. Sensors in the lake also detected unusually cold water arriving from beneath the ice.
The observations suggest that pressure gradually builds in the trapped liquid. Eventually, the salty water is forced through the glacier and escapes at the surface. As it drains, the ice above shifts slightly before the process begins again.
Continued monitoring may reveal how often these releases happen and whether their strength changes over time.
Blood Falls looks like something from a horror film, but its real story is even more remarkable. It is a natural doorway into a hidden world — one where ancient saltwater moves through solid ice and tiny forms of life survive without ever seeing the sun.
